David “Judah 1” Oliver’s newest collection of poems is unwonted in that it lets us observe a conversation between a black man and himself. There are empathy and politics in this collection. There are ego, wordplay, and psychoanalyses. The whole man is presented and artfully expressed. The completion of this body of work is why I’m unabashedly placing it in the category of spiritual texts. Child of the Sun Man of the Moon is a sample (if not an example) of what magic may manifest when we religiously resolve to take responsibility for our entire existence: Mind, Body, and Spirit.
